Dreams of Sugarplums....

This is our dining room table. It's actually the dining room table that J grew up with. His parents were kind enough to give it to us when we got married and had no table. But the truth is, the table is not my style. Justin loves it because it's old and wood. And if it's old and wood, he loves it and never wants to part with it ever.

Although the shape really isn't my style, even more than the shape, the color of the wood matches NOTHING else in the house. And we have quite a few pretty significant wood pieces--the table just does not match any of them. Not the hutch, not the buffet (that J insists we MUST keep even though it doesn't fit anywhere in our house), not the cabinets (which I also want to paint white, but that's a story for another day), not the wood floors.

What I really want to do, is paint the sucker white. My dad has a paint sprayer that I'm sure I could borrow, and coupled with some no-sand primer, I'm thinking this wouldn't be THAT big of a project. And because the wood isn't in great shape and there are butt-marks on the chairs, there's a small chance that Justin might actually go for it.

But honestly, I'm a little intimidated....I don't really paint furniture that often because my husband tends to think it's a mortal sin to pain wood. What do you guys think? Do-able?

  1. I would either paint the chairs white or replace them with a different chair in white. But the table itself looks to be in fairly good condition. I would leave the table alone. I hate having my tables and chairs to matchy matchy.

  2. Yeah, see, having white chairs and a brown table would not work for me at all. To me, that would look FAR worse than the table as it is, and would scream "college apartment!"

Plus, that doens't solve the problem of me hating the color of the table and the fact that it doesn't match anything else.

  4. hehe hoho hahaha.... I love to paint wood. My poor father hates it, but I don't care. I painted my dining set (the one that I dispised and wanted to replace) and hutches and tables. Now, I love them all. I think you have to do what makes you love something, and for me (and possibly you) that is painting. Plus, I was amazed that after painting it, it looked like items I love in magazines like Ballard Designs and Pottery Barn.

PS - It isn't that hard to paint the table and chairs. It just takes time and patience. With a gun, it will go really quickly.

I vote to go for it.

  5. Oh definitely paint it, the chairs need it and it will make you so happy. I paint all wood, and if you do this and it looks smashing, think about how much more he might trust you to paint other wood? (Wishful thinking?)

My dining room table was hideous oak and I painted it and it's now my favorite piece of furniture (we did replace the chairs - ours were way too 70s). It's not a lot of work, and it's so worth it.

  6. I too am terrified to paint furniture. I don't think I could ever talk myself into doing. I see before and afters of people that have done it and I'm amazed, I just don't think I could do it myself. Sorry. I'm no help obviously. BUT, we TOTALLY had that same table growing up! I found one in my area on Craigslist recently and was really tempted to buy it, just because.

  7. I agree with the first comment. I'd definitely paint it or replace the chairs, because the table looks okay, and if you don't like the wood, you could at least cover it with a tablecloth or something...?

  9. Do it. I used my dad's paint sprayer to paint ours and it worked out great. Super easy and it looks so much fresher!

  10. I believe I would think long and hard before covering Justin's childhood memories with white paint.

He compromises a lot and I think his feelings should be given some extra thought on this one.

  11. As someone totally detached form the piece of furniture- I would say "paint it."

But- it is not just a table. It is the table that Justin grew up with. I don't know if you can just paint it. Maybe you could refinish it? Stain it to a color of wood you prefer? I don't know dear- that is tough.

  13. I think it's totally doable..

However, since it was the one Justin grew up with I would definitely be sure to get an ok from him and his parent's first.

  14. i would try something funky and paint the table white (or black) and do the chairs a light blue. i think that would look awesome. :c) really you could do any color combo..white table, black chairs...black chairs, white table...black table, light blue chairs, etc. etc.

  15. I would go ahead and paint it all(with Justin's permission). I don't think that by painting it you will be covering up memories, rather you'll be taking something he grew up with and making new memories by transforming it into something that is both of yours. It definitely looks a little worse for wear and I say have fun with it and take risks! Even with a little paint on it, it will still be the same table and chairs underneath that he grew up with, plus if you have too much wood, it all kind of blends together and doesn't stand out. If he wants the nice wood to stand out (like the beautiful new floors) then by painting the table you'll provide a great contrast!

  16. Justin is right about painting wood, especially old wood that is beautiful in its own right. And that is a fly table, indeed.

  17. I agree with Mrs.LifeAccounts ~ paint it! It is still his table and the memories are there for him and now with a fresh coat of paint you guys together can make fresh memories. I would paint the table black or white high gloss and do an accent color for the chairs. Or paint it all the same color and punch up the color on some chair pads.
